Massage Therapy History

Throughout History massage has been a natural and instinctive way to relieve pain and discomfort. We have an instinct to touch and rub parts of our body that are sore and ache for immediate relief. Although only recently accepted as an accepted medical treatment, massage therapy has been with us from the beginning.

2000 B.C. - Massage was first mentioned in writing.

460-377 B.C. - Hippocrates specifically describes the medical benefits of massage

1517 - 1590 A.D. - Ambrose Paré uses massage techniques for joint stiffness and wound healing after surgery

1776 - 1839 A.D. - Per Henrik Ling develops Swedish Massage

1839 - 1909 A.D. - Massage is introduced to the scientific community by Dr. Johann Mezger.

1865 A.D. - Charles and George Taylor introduced Swedish movements in the United States.

Early 1900's - American physician Randolph Stone creates Polarity therapy.

1920 A.D. - Connective tissue and lymphatic drainage massage developed.

1970 A.D. - Acupressure receives western acceptance.

1992 A.D. - Creation of the National Certification in Therapy Massage and Bodywork (N.C.T.M.B).

1993 A.D. - The New England Journal of Science and Medicine reports the use of alternative and complimentary forms of healthcare.

A.D. - Blue Cross, Blue Shield begins accepting insurance claims for massage therapy.

2004 A.D. - Tallahassee Medical Massage (TMM) Established.
